The first of (hopefully) many! Lauren James finally gets a score for Chelsea, adding an eighth goal to the scoreline for us today.

Leicester City 0 – 9 Chelsea: Lauren James scores first ever Chelsea goal: After thumping second-bottom Leicester at King Power Stadium, Chelsea topped the Women’s Super League for the first time this season.

Chelsea became the first side in the WSL to score three goals in the first ten minutes, with goals from Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr, and Beth England.

Aniek Nouwen scored first, followed by Reiten and Kerr, who all scored twice for the reigning winners.

Lauren James and Jessie Fleming, both substitutes, then scored at the death.

After Arsenal’s match against Tottenham on Saturday was postponed due to coronavirus symptoms among the Spurs players, Chelsea had the chance to replace them at the top of the standings.

Leicester manager Lydia Bedford, whose team was also defeated 7-0 by Chelsea in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup last month, stated before Sunday’s clash that Chelsea is “under pressure.”

Reiten curled in a third-minute free-kick before Kerr raced on to Millie Bright’s through-ball and turned in the rebound after her first attempt was stopped.

On the seven-minute mark, England flicked on a throw for Kerr, who raced forward to catch the return ball and blast into the top corner.

On 11 minutes, Nouwen volleyed in England’s fourth goal, before Reiten dinked a ball towards the far post, allowing England to score with a 28th-minute header.

During first-half stoppage time, a similar pass by Norway midfielder Reiten drifted inside the far post to make it 6-0 at halftime, and Australia forward Kerr headed in England’s chip only two minutes after the restart.

Lauren James came off the bench to score her maiden goal for the club, converting a late cross from Niamh Charles, before Fleming completed a beautiful flowing play to make the final score 9-0.

Chelsea has won their previous five games in all competitions and is a point ahead of Arsenal with five games remaining in the league.

Chelsea currently has a superior goal difference than Arsenal, who they will play in the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals on April 17th.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was certainly pleased with her team’s performance, but she talked candidly after the game about missing her son Harry on Mother’s Day.

“Being apart from him and coming here and sleeping in a hotel made me cry this morning,” she told Sky Sports. “It was quite difficult for me.

“The females questioned why I didn’t bring him with me. That, I remarked, is part of our difficulty as parents: the guilt of being the greatest at our careers while still being parents.

“I’m sorry about that one, and I’m not going to do it again.”
