Transfer Update: Chelsea will try and beat rivals to World Cup star by making January move

Journalist Gianluca di Marzio has told SoccerNews that Chelsea will attempt to beat Real Madrid to the signing of Josko Gvardiol by trying to sign him in January.

The Blues have been linked with a move to sign the Croatian since last summer. Todd Boehly made a late attempt to sign him during the window.

While it didn’t come to fruition, he remained closely linked to a Stamford Bridge switch in the future.

Unfortunately though, they will no doubt be joined in the race for the 20-year-old after he performed sensationally in this winter’s World Cup.

The likes of Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United are all now reportedly interested in a deal.

Chelsea going for Gvardiol in January

Di Marzio has claimed that he believes the Blues will try and get the deal done by moving in January, instead of waiting for the summer.

He said: “I know Chelsea and Real Madrid are most interested in him at the moment. They have already put in bids, but his transfer value has skyrocketed due to his performance in the World Cup. Chelsea will probably make an attempt in January, but Real Madrid prefer a summer deal. I think Madrid would be the best for his career.

“Not only because we are talking about Real Madrid, but also because of the presence of Carlo Ancelotti, and he can make him better. Ancelotti knows a lot about defending and Gvardiol would benefit from the help of an Italian coach at this stage of his career.”

Despite Chelsea already having promising centre-backs such as Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and even Levi Colwill on their books, Thiago Silva is going to leave a huge void when he eventually leaves the club that needs filling by a player who holds qualities similar to Gvardiol
