Player suggests he wasn’t fully into mega Chelsea transfer on long term basis

Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku returned to Inter Milan on a loan deal last summer, a year after the Blues invested more than €100m to secure his services from the Serie A side.

The striker starred in the Nerazzurri’s title winning campaign, scoring 30 goals and contributing 10 assists from 44 games during the 2020/21 season. He wasn’t able to replicate the same form under Thomas Tuchel’s orders at the west London club.

After scoring four goals in his first four games, the 30-year-old managed 10 more goals in the remaining 40 games for Chelsea last season.

Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, the Belgium international has now suggested he had a back-up plan when he agreed to join the Blues in 2022.
“I was good at Chelsea last season. But I knew then that if it didn’t work out at Chelsea, I still had Inter,” he said.
“When I signed again, I knew: I belong here. I had that too at Anderlecht. I take this club seriously. I want to do my best. The people here see that. Being encouraged here is the best thing there is.”

Lukaku has to return to the Premier League side after the end of this season. It’s not clear whether the Blues will include him in their plans for next season.
