Keep, loan or sell? See Transfer status of every Chelsea midfielder this summer

The summer transfer window is set to begin in less than a week and Chelsea have a lot of decisions to make.

The first task facing Thomas Tuchel and new owner Todd Boehly is decide who stays and who leaves the club.

Here, we take a look at the status of every midfielder at Chelsea and give our verdict on what should happen to them this summer.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United with his deal expiring in 2023. While injuries have affected Kante’s recent performances, it would be unwise to sell him.

This is because he’s still only 31 and has a few good years ahead of him. While he may not be the game-changer he was when he arrived, we can’t imagine selling Kante to a Premier League rival. His contract must be renewed.

What Chelsea should do: Keep, renew contract

The midfielder still puts in some good performances but Jorginho was nowhere near as impactful last season as he was in our Champions League-winning campaign.

He is constantly linked with a move to Italy and with only one year left on his deal, it makes sense to cash in on him as he’s not going to get better now.

What Chelsea should do: Sell

This one is a no-brainer. Kovacic was probably Chelsea’s best central midfielder last season and his absence was felt on the pitch when he was injured. He’s younger than the other two main options and has to stay here.

What Chelsea should do: Keep

Another easy decision – Barkley’s Chelsea career has been nothing short of a disaster and there is no future for him here.

What Chelsea should do: Sell

Mount was involved in more goals than any other Chelsea player and he is one of the three most important players in the team.

His contract doesn’t expire until 2025 but he’s due a new deal given his meteoric rise and the new ownership must tie him down to a long-term contract as soon as possible.

A lot of clubs such as Everton, Crystal Palace and more are interested in signing the talented player. Chelsea’s task is clear – ensure Gallagher of a good future here and keep him no matter what offer comes in.

What Chelsea should do: Keep

The youngster broke onto the scene with great promise but his loan spell at Norwich was poor as he didn’t get a lot of playing time in a team that was relegated from the Premier League.

It would be unwise to sell Gilmour as he’s still an elite talent who just needs more game time to succeed. However, those minutes must come somewhere else.

What Chelsea should do: Loan to a Premier League club

Saul failed to have any positive impact with Chelsea and it would be a dumb decision to sign him on a permanent deal.

What Chelsea should do: Send him back to Atletico Madrid

Loftus-Cheek had some promising games for the Blues but he now enters the second-last year of his deal and with Chelsea actively looking for a midfield signing, he must step up his performances to warrant playing time.

That being said, he can be a valuable rotation player who can lead the midfield in early domestic cup games. Chelsea can wait and see if he improves his game in the coming campaign before deciding on his future.
