How Potter Is Stalling The Progress Of Chelsea’s Young Forwards With His Tactical Substitutions
After Mykhaylo Mudryk made a good impression on his Premier league debut against Liverpool at Anfield Stadium by coming on as a second half substitute, the Ukrainian Winger was thrown into Chelsea’s starting lineup in the next 3 consecutive games in all competitions.
He started in 2 back-to-back Premier League games against Fulham and West Ham United. He also started in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park in Germany.
After Mykhaylo Mudryk failed to make any impact in those 3 games as a starter, Graham Potter dropped him to the Bench.
Against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Mykhaylo Mudryk didn’t Start but he was expected to come on as a second half substitute in the game until Graham Potter shocked him as the Former Shakhtar Donestk’s Star remained as an unused substitute in the game.
He started against Leicester City at King Power Stadium about two weekends ago where he made his first goal contribution for Chelsea by assisting Mateo Kovavic’s goal against the Foxes but, Graham Potter decided to keep him on the bench against Everton last weekend.
Unlike Joao Felix and Enzo Fernandez who didn’t need time to adapt to the pace of Premier League football, it seems Mykhaylo Mudryk requires more time and that makes it understandable why he’s no longer a starter.
However, he’s not going to get better if he’s not getting playing time. Instead of getting minutes as a second half substitute, Graham Potter doesn’t make use of his Forwards in the second half because that’s when he defends.
Mykhaylo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and David Datro Fofana are all wasting away on the Bench because they don’t get to make any contribution in the game.
