Havertz, Lukaku, Werner: Who Was Chelsea’s Best and Worst Striker Last Season?

Chelsea was one of the best teams in the English Premier League last season but their overall performance was not up to expectations. Many thought the Blues would at least give Liverpool and Manchester City a run for their money in the title race after winning the Champions League the season before.

At the end of the season, The Blues were only able to finish third on the log. However, they won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup and also reached the final of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. Thomas Tuchel’s side also managed to reach the quarter-final of the Champions League before they were eliminated by eventual winners, Real Madrid.

Chelsea’s most glaring problem and the reason why they didn’t perform better than they did last season was the form of their forwards. Chelsea’s main forwards last season were Romelu Lukaku, who was signed from Inter Milan last summer, Kai Havertz, and Timo Werner.

Kai Havertz stepped up when Romelu Lukaku was out of form in the middle of the season. The German attacker, who is not a natural striker, played the role admirably. In 47 appearances in all competitions, he scored 14 goals and provided 6 assists.

Romelu Lukaku was signed by Chelsea to help the Blues push for their first English Premier League title since 2017. However, the Belgian striker flattered to deceive for the most part of last season. In 44 games in all competitions, he managed to score 15 goals and provide 2 assists.

Timo Werner was not a regular in the starting lineup last season but whenever he was called upon, he almost always delivered. The German forward played 37 games in all competitions last season, scoring 11 goals and providing 6 assists.

Based on the stats above, Kai Havertz was Chelsea’s best forward last season while Romelu Lukaku was the Blues’ worst forward. This is because, despite Timo Werner playing 7 games less than the Belgium star, he still contributed to the same number of goals.
