Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly decided he would be prepared to part company with Real Madrid target Kai Havertz this summer, providing a replacement is signed. The newly-appointed Chelsea boss has wasted no time at all since being unveiled as Frank Lampard’s successor having already ditched loanees Joao Felix and Denis Zakaria, who have returned to Atletico Madrid and Juventus respectively.

Now Pochettino is looking to put his own stamp on his squad although there is recognition that player sales must be prioritised if he wishes to spend excessively in the summer market.

Widespread reports in Spain have made it clear that Havertz is among the names that feature on Real Madrid’s wish-list, regardless of Karim Benzema’s future.

Benzema is now set to remain in the Spanish capital after receiving a life-changing offer from Saudi Arabia and the Frenchman could yet sign a short-term contract extension with Los Blancos.

Nonetheless, Havertz remains a player of interest as he can also play behind the frontman, filling the void of Paris Saint-Germain-bound Marco Asensio.

According to Relevo in Spain, Pochettino would be willing to sanction the departure of Havertz if he was guaranteed a replacement.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man has flattered to deceive since arriving in west London for £72million in the summer of 2020 having netted just seven Premier League goals last season.

Yet his lacklustre numbers do not seem to deter Real Madrid, who are long-term admirers of the Germany international having also launched an enquiry for his services last summer.

An attacking revolution could be on the cards at Chelsea and it seems Pochettino is targeting a new marquee centre-forward which could have damaging implications for Havertz’s playing time.

Add to that, RB Leizpig’s Christopher Nkunku is set to join the Blues after the DFB-Pokal final and Pochettino is expected to build around this season’s Bundesliga Golden Boot winner.

Real Madrid are also weighing up the signing of Roberto Firmino on a free transfer meaning a swoop for Havertz is not necessarily guaranteed at this stage.

If Chelsea are to sell the player, they are likely to demand a premium fee in a bid to recoup the majority of the £72m they shelled out to Bayer Leverkusen for his signature three years ago.

Havertz has frequently been linked with a transfer to Bayern Munich but the Bundesliga champions are understood to be targeting alternative forwards including Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus.

Speaking back in March, Havertz conceded it would be hard to say no to the Bavaria giants if they ever came calling – whilst also noting his interest in the prospect of playing in Spain.

“Bayern are generally a huge club that it’s hard to say no to as a German player, but my personal goal has always been to play abroad at some point. In England or Spain,” he declared.

With Mason Mount seemingly headed for Manchester United, Havertz is likely to be battling Nkunku for opportunities in the No.10 role where he previously thrived with Leverkusen.

He has largely been utilised as a false-nine during his time at Chelsea after previously thriving in the position under Thomas Tuchel – netting the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City in Porto.
