Bad news for Chelsea, Man Utd as Man City prepare to ‘break the bank’ with ‘monstrous’ bid for defender

Man City are ready to ‘break the bank’ for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol as they consider making an offer for the World Cup star, according to reports.

The Croatian defender was already on the radars of a number of top clubs around Europe but his brilliant performances at the World Cup have taken his stock to another level.

Chelsea and Man Utd have been linked more than most to the centre-back with Gvardiola helping Croatia progress to the World Cup semi-finals before being knocked out by Argentina.

Reports in the summer claimed that Chelsea submitted a €90m offer for Gvardiol but that was turned down and he later signed a new deal with Leipzig until 2027.

However, Gvardiola recently flirted with the idea that he could move to Chelsea in the future but insisted that he is “happy” with the Bundesliga outfit.

“About me and Chelsea? I don’t know. You know what happened in the last few months. To be honest, I have no idea,” Gvardiol told The Athletic earlier this month.

“My agent is taking care of this and we will see. Right now, I’m happy in Leipzig. I don’t know, we will see – you never know.

“You know the stories and these things, but all I can say is that I’m happy in Leipzig and right now I’m going to stay there and perform for them.”

Man Utd have reportedly already made a ‘crazy €95m offer’ for Gvardiol ahead of the January transfer window with the race for his signature heating up.

And now journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims that Gvardiol’s performances at the World Cup have ‘raised hell’ in the transfer market  with Real Madrid and Manchester City entering the race.

He is on Real’s ‘wish list’ but it is Man City who are looking at ‘breaking the bank’ for the 20-year-old with the Premier League side contacting Leipzig to place a proposal of ‘€130m, including bonuses and/or a percentage on future sales’.

Man City are in ‘close contract with Leipzig’ over a deal for Gvardiol and are willing to ‘double’ Real’s salary offer of €6m per season, with AS describing the package offered from the Citizens as ‘monstrous’.

Man City are using ‘the power of money’ to beat Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man Utd to Gvardiol’s signature as it stands with AS pointing to the huge salary offer to bring Erling Haaland to the Etihad Stadium in the summer
